Treasures in Jars of Clay

Bible Verse
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” — 2 Corinthians 4:7

Reflection
In Paul’s time, clay jars were common ordinary, fragile, and easily broken. They were not valuable in themselves, but they could carry something precious inside. Paul uses this image to remind us that we, too, are like those jars. Weak, limited, sometimes cracked. Yet inside us, God has placed His greatest treasure the light of the gospel, the presence of Christ, and the power of His Spirit.
This truth is both humbling and freeing. Humbling because it reminds us that our strength and worth do not come from ourselves. Freeing because even in our weakness, God’s glory shines brightest. Our cracks and imperfections don’t disqualify us; they actually allow His light to shine through.
Think of a lantern made of clay: when it has no cracks, the light is hidden. But when it’s broken, light escapes and touches the darkness outside. In the same way, God often uses our struggles, scars, and broken places to reveal His grace to others.
So instead of hiding our weakness, we can embrace it as the very place where God’s power is made perfect. We are fragile jars, but we carry a treasure that cannot be measured.

Prayer
“Lord, thank You for entrusting Your treasure to fragile jars like me. Help me not to be discouraged by my weakness, but to see it as an opportunity for Your power to shine. May every crack in my life reflect Your light to others and bring glory to Your name. Amen.”
